Padel was founded in 1969 by Enrique Corcuera, in Acapulco, Mexico. He had a small tennis court on his property, and to ensure the surrounding vegetation wouldn’t invade it, he built walls around it. The first ruleset was created by Corcuera’s wife, who gifted it to him as his birthday present. Corcuera was close friends with Prince Alfonso de Hohenlohe, a Spanish businessman, who became an immediate fan of the sport when he visited Corcuera. Hohenlohe introduced the sport in Marbella, founding the first European Padel Club in 1974. The sport quickly became popular when Spanish King Juan Carlos and ex-Wimbledon champion Manolo Santana started playing it. In the early 90s, there were over 1 million Padel players in Spain. Padel has gained popularity throughout Europe and the rest of the world, and it’s estimated that over 25 million people currently play this sport in over 90 countries.
